Minster CHIROPRACTIC TIP OF THE MONTH: Exercise the Quadratus Lumborum

The quadratus lumborum – a quadrilateral-shaped muscle - is a paired muscle on the left and right side of the abdominal wall. It is a deep muscle and typically thought of as a back muscle as it extends from the 12th rib to the upper 4 lumbar vertebrae. When contracted, the quadratus lumborum triggers lateral flexion of the lumbar spine and/or elevation of the pelvis. (5) A variety of bridge-type exercises are being studied about the way in which they strengthen the quadratus lumborum’s 2 layers of muscle in order for it to best contribute to the motor control of the lumbar pain and avert back pain. (6) Minster Chiropractic Center and you can discuss how your spine may benefit from such exercise at your next Minster chiropractic visit to Minster Chiropractic Center.
